Indonesia is one of the beautiful countries I’ve ever visited. Amongst its 18000+ islands are smouldering volcanoes, stunning beaches, crystal blue waters, fascinating creatures and mouth-watering food and insane sunsets. If you want to truly get away from it all, escape the addictive craziness of Bali to find untouched gems unlike anywhere else in the world.
My Indonesia Highlights
Here’s where I got to in Indonesia. Click the destination name for related blog posts.
It’s not too often you can go volcano hopping but on Java, it’s easy to jump from one spectacular volcano to the next. Indonesia’s main island also hosts a few cool stopovers along the way.
There’s not much to say about Bali you won’t already know. Yes, people do flock here but they flock here for a reason. Bali is so much more than just a tourist trap. Mix beach bumming with some inland exploration, coastal walks and maybe a volcano hike.
With a more chilled-out vibe than neighbouring Bali, Lombok has so much to offer. You won’t have to spend as much time fighting for beach space; there’s some cool, hipster towns and yet another insane volcano to scale.
It’s difficult to go wrong here – three gorgeous (but touristy) paradise islands to choose from. You can opt for party, remote or something in between. With all three islands, you’ll get spectacular sunsets, great food and clear blue waters.
Flores is an explorer’s dream – it’s easy to get off the beaten trail here because even this island’s top sights don’t draw many crowds. There are rustic beaches, more crazily beautiful sunsets, komodo dragons, hair-raising bus rides, sulphuric volcanoes, rice terraces and super friendly people.
