Capital City: Rome
Years I Visited: 2013, 2016
You could visit Italy for the food alone. I didn’t really get how good fresh Italian pasta could be until I tried it in Italy for the first time. And the pizza… and the gelato… Oh, and Italy has a ton of cool cities, amazing beaches, world famous architecture and fantastic transport. There’s not really a reason not to go.
My Italy Highlights
Here’s where I got to in Italy. Click the destination name for related blog posts.
The home of bolognese – and it’s seriously good here – Bologna is a pleasant city, often with cheap flights. Thanks to Italy’s excellent train network, it’s ideally placed to get to any of Italy’s main tourist cities.
Admittedly, Florence isn’t my favourite Italian city (*gasp*) but it’s well worth a meander round for it’s amazing architecture. It’s also a great place to people watch, get fantastic views of the city and eat – as if you need an excuse in Italy.
Pisa has a special place in my heart because it was the first city I ever solo backpacked to way back in 2013. Whilst you can pop here for a day trip, beyond the main square, this is a nice, chilled out place with more great food. A day trip to nearby Lucca is well worth it. Oh, also there’s a tower you can visit apparently.
Rome is one of my favourite cities ever. There’s just so much going on here and a short stroll can take you through history, food, culture, religion, architecture, parks and even another country. It’s difficult to run out of things to do here.
