Mexico really does have it all and you could spend months exploring this amazing country. It’s got a vibrant culture, colonial architecture, mouth-watering food, breathtaking beaches and some great hostels. It’s definitely a country to make more than one visit to.
My Mexico Highlights
Here’s where I got to in Mexico. Click the destination name for related blog posts.
Beaches are the name of the game in Mexico and Cancun boasts a damn good one. The huge beach here means even when it’s busy, you can still find your own spot. It’s also easily accessible by bus so you can stay cheaply in Cancun’s centre rather than forking out for a swanky resort.
Great architecture, great food, great hostels, great day trips and great people – Merida is an absolute joy. It’s also a great base from which to check out the nearby ruins of Uxmal.
A pleasant, traditional town ideally placed for an early morning trip to Chichen Itza (a Wonder of the World). It’s also home to its very own cenote, underground pools scattered all around this region.
Yet more ruins and cenotes, though Tulum’s sights have a different vibe and the ramshackle town has a good vibe – well worth a stop.
This is a picture perfect island with soft white sand which goes on forever. The slightly odd formation of the beach means it’s more suited to long beach walks rather than sunbathing. There’s a great atmosphere here too.
Worth a stop on your way down to Belize, this town has more great food but is most famous for its ‘Lagoon of 7 Colours’, a huge lake with a range of turquoise and blue colours at any given time.
