Anyone who’s watched Lord of the Rings doesn’t need to be told about New Zealand’s stunning natural beauty but it’s still truly something to behold when you see it for real. This is a small nation which packs a big punch, to the point that I become wistful every time I see a photo of it.
My New Zealand Highlights
Here’s where I got to in New Zealand. Click the destination name for related blog posts.
For the largest city on the South Island, Christchurch doesn’t half feel quiet. It’s a great place to get away from it all, plus it’s ideally placed for visits to the seaside and the countryside. Just be prepared for constantly changing weather!
I unashamedly love Queenstown; not only does it have the most scenic airport landing I’ve ever experienced but it is surrounded by enough natural beauty to keep an avid hiker like me satisfied for days. The pies are to die for as well.
A handy day trip from Queenstown, or a place to stay in its own right, Wanaka boasts a gorgeous lake with snow-capped mountains (in the winter anyway) behind and a gorgeous walking trail. People are also pretty obsessed by a tree…
A boat ride around “the 8th Wonder of the World” (isn’t everything?) is a really amazing experience. Milford Sound has the added bonus of being incredible in all seasons and all weathers, which is lucky since it rains here a lot.
