The quintessential backpacker destination has earned its reputation for a reason. Yes, it’s touristy (though not everywhere) but it’s also crazily fun, crazily beautiful and crazily intoxicating. It’s easy, it’s still cheap and it’s pretty hard not to see why it’s called the Land of Smiles.
My Thailand Highlights
Here’s where I got to in Thailand. Click the destination name for related blog posts.
Still noisy and colourful, Bangkok is as fun and frustrating as ever. Whether you’re after golden temples, sensational street food, cheap shopping or a damn good night out, this bonkers city has it all.
Like much of Thailand, you’re probably not going to have the place to yourself here but there’s plenty of beach space to go round, plus some great sunsets and nightlife.
Up in the North, Thailand’s second city is even more of a backpacker’s dream than Bangkok. Within its city walls are a wealth of cool cafes, restaurants and bars and lush countryside is just a short motorbike ride away.
Though not as laden with sights as nearby Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai is well-placed to head over into Laos and is also near to the iconic White Temple, a bizarre architectural wonder which is well worth a look.
Home of the famous Bridge over the River Kwai, Kanchanaburi is a lovely breezy train ride away from Bangkok and hosts wartime history, yummy cuisine, a chugging train and some gorgeous waterfalls nearby. A perfect place to recharge.
